Youth Leaders Scholarship Initiative

The S. J. Petteway Family Youth Leaders Scholarship Initiative of Waterbury, CT. named in honor of Rev. Stanley and Juanita Petteway, is a partnership with Leaders Institute and Zion Baptist Church of Waterbury CT. The program provides leadership training and a college scholarship to qualifying youth of Waterbury, CT and surrounding areas.
The program pays tribute to the legacy of the late Rev. S.P. Petteway and Juanita Petteway of Waterbury, CT. Rev. Dr. S.P. Petteway, was a staunch advocate for education and civic engagement, while Mrs. Juanita Petteway, had a profound love for people.
A scholarship award of $1,000.00 is granted to exceptional student leaders, with the intent of helping them realize their maximum potential. Each student participates in a series of leadership sessions with local community leaders and designs a community service project to effect positive change in Waterbury, CT.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM INFORMATION
- PHASE ONE: Online application submissions: 12/01/2025 - 01/03/2026
- PHASE TWO: Semifinalist interviews: 01/12/2026 - 01/25/2026
- PHASE THREE: Selection notification: 01/26/2026 - 01/31/2026
- PHASE FOUR: Leadership training & development classes: 02/14/2026 - 03/29/2026
- PHASE FIVE: Scholarship Award Ceremony: 04/2026
Who Can Apply
- High school seniors (Grade 12) planning to enroll full-time in a four-year degree program at a U.S.-accredited, not-for-profit, private or public college, university, or vocational training program.
- Academic standing: Minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
- Availability: Able to attend four in-person Saturday leadership training and development sessions at Zion Baptist Church in Waterbury, CT, between February and March 2026.
- Participation: Available to attend the culminating ceremony in April 2026.
- Community engagement: Willing to implement a service project to benefit the local community of Waterbury, CT, or the surrounding area.
